Shades of Schiavo?... Is the return of the culture war bad news for the GOP?...
Rev. J. - you're overlooking that UM also provides UNDERinsured motorist coverage. If someone is at fault and injures you in a car accident but doesn't have enough coverage to pay for your damages, then you are covered through UIM. It's not as easy as "doing the math" to come to the conclusion that you're being ripped off. As far as collecting premiums from 19.5 million people, it seems you're also assuming that the insurance company's risk of loss isn't taken into account at arriving at the premium amount.
DB Akron - nice analysis. If the HC reform bill passes as you suggest then the Dems will certainly lose seats in 2010. There are so many questions. Let me say this: in the absence of information, the mind fills with negative thoughts. And there so many unanswered questions. Using generalizations and saying, as Obama did in New Hampshire Town Hall, the gov't is already a service that is in competition with the private sector...the USPS vs FedEx and UPS. Guess what, I don't think the using the USPS which is running something like a $27 billion deficit as a model for running Healthcare just doesn't make sense to me and a lot of other tax paying Americans. Why else wouln't I want a "public option." Read on.
The Ways and Means Committee (W&MC) voted to NOT to:
1. specifically ban illegals being covered in the HC reform bill
2. specifically ban abortions
3. specifically ban Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER). CER advocated by Dr. E. Emanuel, Rahm's brother, can and does limited care and service. Watch out children under 10 and seniors over 60.
4. specifically ban Quality of Life Years (QALY). QALY by Prof. P. Singer, Princeton University, said in his NY Times Magazine article this month said: Limiting healthcare to those deemed best to serve society is necessary and cites an example: one 15-year old is worth 14 85-year olds. Watch out grannie.
5. have Congress and all 2.5+ million Federal employees covered by the HC reform bill.Regarding points 1 and 2, if something is not specifically "banned" in a bill like abortions and it's a "recognized medical procedure" it can be done and funded by the bill.
Same goes for illegals. If they aren't specifically "banned from receiving care under the HC reform bill, they can't be denied service. This is why hospitals are going broke. You see and illegal MUST be tended to if he/she goes into an Emergency Room to receive care. They go in, get medical care and don't pay. One case in Stuart, Fl where an illegal from Honduras rec'd over $1.5million in medical care before the hospital packed him off to Honduras. The hospital was sued by the illegal's relatives and lost. The jury said the hospital was right to send the illegal back.
Hey DB, I have a scenario for you. In Missouri, drivers are MANDATED to carry auto insurance. We are also mandated to carry "uninsured motorists" insurance. Why? If everyone who drives has insurance, why is the U.M. coverage required? I'm paying for the "outlaws". And, the insurance company doubles up on their profits, that's why.
We'll say there are 20 million motorists in Missouri. (just a figure for illustration) 19.5 million of those have insurance, 1/2 a million don't. The insurance company is collecting Uninsured Motorists premiums 19.5 million times to cover 1/2 million people. Do the math....someone's ripping us off here. I see this same thing coming down the pike with the "mandatory health insurance", namely a tag-along charging us for "uninsured citizen's health insurance". Why? the Gov't wants our money, and they'll legislate a way to get it. I've had no health insurance since 1993, can't afford it. Therefore, if I'm hurt, I've suffered with it till it heals on its own. I've never received any "charity or free" health care ever. If they legislate me to get insurance, they'd better legislate me the money to pay for it, too. Of course, only the Gov't can legislate themselves money when they run out. What about the rest of us?— Rev.J
